Build with Invoist

Read invoices from your own code, build an app other Invoist users can add, or let an AI assistant look through your invoices for you.

Read invoices in your own code

Send an invoice file to the API and get back the supplier, dates, totals and line items as JSON.

Build an app for Invoist users

Make an app that people add to their own Invoist account, with their permission, from the Integrations page in the Invoist app.

Ask an AI assistant about your invoices

Connect Claude, ChatGPT, or another assistant to your Invoist account in a couple of minutes, then ask which invoices need checking or what you spent. No code needed.

Connect your assistant

Your first API request

Three steps from a new account to an invoice read by the API.

  1. 1
Create an Invoist account. Every plan includes the API. See plans.
  2. 2
Create an API key in the app under Integrations, then API (a household: Settings, then AI assistants). Keys start with inv_sk_ and are shown once, so copy yours straight away.
  3. 3
Send an invoice with the request below, with your key in place of $INVOIST_API_KEY.
Your first request
curl -X POST https://api.invoi.st/v1/extract \
  -H "Authorization: Bearer $INVOIST_API_KEY" \
  -F "[email protected]"

The API answers straight away, while the invoice is still being read: in the response, extraction.status is pending. Take the document.id from that response and ask for GET /v1/documents/{id} every few seconds until the status is done. Then the same response holds everything read from the invoice. The API introduction walks through it.

The app or the API?

You don't need these docs to use Invoist. The Invoist app reads invoices, sorts them into categories, checks the totals and holds anything odd, like new bank details, for you to check. The API gives developers the same reading as JSON, to use in their own software. Every plan includes both.

Looking for a field?

Every field the API returns, with its type and an example, is in the API reference.
